SMOKE-WANTER

The Polish are known for so many great things other than being a source for culturally-offensive jokes. The beer style Grodziskie is historically known as ‘The Champagne of Poland’. Its simplicity is its strength. The grain bill is 100% Oak-smoked wheat malt. This means that during the malting process, after sprouting the grain in warm water, drying takes place using incinerated oak wood, instead of using either gas or electric heat. The smoke imparts a strong aroma and flavor. Hops and yeast really don’t have much to say here. Really there isn’t much else contributing anything other than smoke. A mild acidity from the malt, as well as a high carbonation level bring a snappy start and finish. The beer definitely doesn’t taste like it smells, especially after taking the first sip. People are divided on the perceptions: either with some leaning toward meaty, porcine, spicy sausage, or some others getting wood stove, and sweet campfire.

It’s a very different beer, both historically and regionally, and unlike anything available around La Grande. Whether this brand, or another, we will try to keep something smoky around for those that can’t be without.
